Mercury / Digital Realty – Data Center FRA33, Hattersheim

For the FRA33 data center project in Hattersheim, a comprehensive electromagnetic shielding concept was implemented to reduce low-frequency magnetic fields. The objective was the reliable protection of sensitive IT infrastructure and adjacent areas by means of continuous, technically integrated metal shielding.

Project Scope

Several thousand square metres of shielding area were realised across various building components:

  • Ceiling areas: approx. 3,322 m² — Full-coverage shielding of the data hall ceiling areas (NE & NW)
  • Wall areas (interior façades): approx. 2,042 m² — Full-surface shielding along the building envelope across several storeys
  • Floor areas: approx. 3,270 m² — Partial and full shielding of the floor areas depending on external interference sources
  • Special areas: approx. 533 m² — Complete room shielding (walls, ceiling, floor) as well as integration of shielded doors and technical zones

Technical Implementation

The shielding was carried out using continuous metallic layers to reduce low-frequency magnetic fields. The execution was precisely adapted to the structural conditions:

  • Mechanical fixing to reinforced concrete (ceiling, wall, floor)
  • Continuous, closed shielding surfaces without interruptions
  • Adaptation to load-bearing structures, girder structures, and façade connections
  • Integration into existing building and data center infrastructure
